Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. A dental office team that is unchanged over several years is uncommon. One like ours that is stable together over decades is exceptional. Dr. Loshin
I came to dentistry in an unusual way … from medicine. As a graduate medical student at Washington University, I happened to pick up a dentistry book while browsing in the Medical/Dental Bookstore. I was fascinated. Here was a "helping profession" that absolutely required artistic talent in addition to the "science smarts" that got one into medical school. (I had, in earlier years considered a career in art or architecture, having recognized my artistic talents as early as elementary school.) But I was in medical school, working hard, achieving "honors" level grades, but having a nagging feeling that being a physician might fall short of my ultimate fulfillment. And after all, isn't the mouth just another area of the body, with its' own specialist like the brain (neurosurgeon) or heart (cardiologist)?
I quickly found that for some reason dentistry was considered a "lesser" profession than medicine, as in "less noble", and "less money", which my friends and family quickly pointed out. Not a single one supported my desire to leave medicine and enter dentistry.
I ignored them. I followed my heart and my own internal values compass. I became the first person ever, in the history of Washington University, to transfer from medical school to dental school. (And to my knowledge no one has done it since.) With "honors" grades in medical school, the dean offered me a teaching position for those medical courses, which are part of the early dental school curriculum. Over the next three years I taught, I learned, and I fell in love with dentistry! I thrived.
I graduated valedictorian, first in my class, and with highest honors from Washington University School of Dental Medicine. I guess dentistry agreed with me!
Perhaps because of my medical background, I chose to pursue a hospital-based General Practice Dental Residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago after dental school. Only ten percent of general dentists have this type of advanced post-graduate experience before starting dental practice.
I came to Seattle with my wife, Peggy, to climb mountains, breathe clean air and start a dental practice. I soon learned that the third essential quality of an excellent dentist, besides artistic talent and science smarts, is the ability to "listen" - to truly hear and understand the desires of each patient as an individual. The mouth forms words but it is the mind that speaks. I love the challenge of understanding the feelings, fears, and desires that each person has about their teeth, their smile and their health. Without judging or criticizing, how can we move forward, together, to improve each of these?
Can we balance the desire to look good (cosmetic dentistry) with the need to improve health (preventive dentistry)? Yes, we can. With all the new advances in dental technology, getting healthy and looking great now go hand in hand.
Artistic talent, medical science foundation, real listening and caring, are the hallmarks of my practice. I spend many hours each year attending advanced education courses with the world's top experts in cosmetic dentistry, implantology and preventive dentistry.
I love dentistry because I love to learn. I love to teach. I love to listen. I love to create healthy, beautiful smiles. I chose dentistry over medicine and I've never regretted it for a minute. Dentistry is ultimately a very personal business. The mouth is a very personal, sensitive, body part, and it always comes along with a "mind." When the "mind" smiles along with the mouth, I know I have truly helped another person!

Outside the office My passions are my wife - Peggy, a beautiful bundle of energy, my kids - Jacob the politician and magician on his way to a law career, Benjamin the musician, engineering student, and Evan my youngest, teenage, all-around great kid. Fine woodworking, creative tile art, interior design and photography are my artistic outlets. I am a tinkerer, with some creative project always underway! I've never been one to enjoy fancy cars or fancy clothes. I take the bus to the office. I volunteer building houses for Habitat For Humanity, because it's another way to help people, that's quite different from dentistry. And sometimes, it's just fun to cut sheetrock! Although I enjoy hiking, camping, mountaineering, rollerblading, skiing, and photographing the great Pacific Northwest, my main passion is bicycling on those funny looking bikes called "recumbents." When you've got an hour to spare, just ask me about my "bents."
Janett
Hello and welcome! I'm Janett, and I've been Dr. Loshin's office manager since 1982. There have been many changes in my life since then, but one thing that has not changed is my desire to work with people and help them achieve a healthy smile. The thing I like most about our practice is that everyone truly treats each patient the way they personally would want to be treated by a health professional. Dr. Loshin, Chris and Claire are great team players and they know how to "plork". (Combine "play" and "work") Go ahead and ask me about that one!
I am really looking forward to helping you with your dental care. - Janett
